I’ve been a resident of Florence for a while now, and there’s one thing I can tell you for certain: this town has a magic to it that gets under your skin in the best way possible. It’s more than just a place to live; it’s a community that embraces you, a city with a rich history, and a hub of creativity that’s constantly evolving. If you’re thinking about moving to a place with small-town charm and big-city amenities, look no further than our little slice of heaven on the Tennessee River.
The Vibe is Just Right
One of the first things you’ll notice about Florence is the atmosphere. It’s relaxed and friendly, with a genuine Southern hospitality that makes everyone feel welcome. The pace of life is slower here, but that doesn’t mean we’re boring. There’s a vibrant energy, especially in our downtown area.
Walking down Court Street, you’ll find a mix of locally owned boutiques, art galleries, and incredible restaurants. The historic downtown is so walkable, and you’ll love spending an afternoon just browsing the shops. My personal favorite is finding unique gifts at stores like Ye Ole General Store or browsing the latest designs at the Billy Reid flagship store.
Music is in Our Soul
Florence is part of the “Shoals” area, a region that’s legendary in the music world. We are the birthplace of the blues, thanks to W.C. Handy, and the sound of the Shoals has been a staple in music for decades. Artists like The Rolling Stones and Aretha Franklin recorded at iconic studios like FAME and Muscle Shoals Sound, and that legacy lives on. You can feel it in the air.
As a resident, you get to experience this history firsthand. You can visit the W.C. Handy Birthplace, Museum & Library, or take a tour of one of the legendary recording studios. The best part? You can catch live music almost any night of the week at one of the local venues. We also celebrate our heritage with events like the annual W.C. Handy Music Festival, which is a fantastic summer tradition.
Food, Glorious Food!
Let’s be honest, good food is essential for a happy life, and Florence does not disappoint. The culinary scene here is a perfect blend of classic Southern comfort food and innovative, elevated dining. For a truly unique and delicious meal, you have to try Odette, a neighborhood eatery that serves up incredible American fare with a Southern twist.
If you’re in the mood for Italian, Ricatoni’s Italian Grill is an institution and a must-try. For something a little more casual, you can’t go wrong with Trowbridge’s, an old-school diner that has been a local favorite since 1918. Their famous orange-pineapple ice cream is the stuff of local legend!
Natural Beauty and Outdoor Fun
Life in Florence is all about being close to nature. We’re situated right on the Tennessee River, and it’s a focal point of our city. McFarland Park is a favorite spot for me to unwind. You can go for a walk along the river, have a picnic, or watch the sunset over the water. The park is also a hub for boating and fishing.
Beyond the river, there are plenty of other parks and outdoor spaces to enjoy. Deibert Park offers beautiful walking trails and a peaceful setting, and River Heritage Park has an awesome splash pad and playground that’s perfect for a hot day. If you’re a hiker, you’ll love the trails in the area, and for a real adventure, the Bankhead National Forest is only a short drive away.
Community Events and Culture
One of the things I love most about living here is that there’s always something going on. Downtown Florence hosts “First Fridays” every month, a street festival with local artists, vendors, food, and live music. The Alabama Renaissance Faire is another event that brings the whole community together, as do the various festivals throughout the year.
The arts are thriving here. You can catch a play at the Shoals Theatre or check out the rotating exhibits at the Kennedy-Douglass Center for the Arts. And for a unique dose of history, you have to visit the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Rosenbaum House—it’s the only one of its kind in Alabama and a true architectural gem.
Living in Florence means being a part of a community that values its history, celebrates its creativity, and enjoys a high quality of life. It’s the kind of place where you know your neighbors and the local business owners know your name. I can’t imagine calling anywhere else home, and I’m sure you’ll feel the same way.
